Pier Gerlofs Donia, also known as Grutte Pier, might be the most legendary Frisian. He lived between 1480 and 1520 and was a simple farmer in the village of Kimswerd. Around that time, there was a civil war going on and Pier’s wife and children were killed. Pier decided to pick up his sword and fight the occupier. 500 years later, Grutte Pier is still the most well-known Frisian freedom fighter. There was even a statue erected for him in Kimswerd.
Producer Steven de Jong, who is known for the movies “De Schippers van de Kameleon”, “De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe” and “De hel van 63”, is making a series about Grutte Pier, in collaboration with Omrop Fryslân. These eight episodes, covering eight years of his life, show how Grutte Pier became Grutte Pier.
